Help us build the Ultimate Monsters’ Encyclopedia

Another method of classifying magic is by "traditions," which in this context typically refer to complexes of magical belief and practice associated with various cultural groups and lineages of transmission. These traditions can compass both divination and spells.

We have detailed the main and most popular traditions but they are probably more than one hundred to date.

Shamanism

Hermetism

Witchcraft

Necromancy

Goetic Magic

Enochian Magic

Thelema Magick

Wicca

Voodoo

Chaos Magic

Ceremonial magic, often abbreviated as CM, is a tradition inspired largely by Hermetism and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. It includes, but is not limited to, Goetic magick, Enochian Magic, Tarot, Astrology, Grimoire magick, hermetic qabalah and Thelemic ritual.

Ceremonial magic is commonly considered the most complex form of magick. It utilizes elaborate magic theory, draws from a large body of literature and always uses ritual. Practitioners of CM often organize themselves in magical societies such as the Builders of the Adytum, the various forms of the Ordo Templi Orientis or the Argenteum Astrum.
